Jimmy Shergill recently shared insights into his journey landing his debut film ‘Maachis’. He reminisced about the moment when he met Gulzar, who offered him the role. Surprisingly, Jimmy initially expressed interest in working as an assistant director on the project. Additionally, he disclosed the compensation he received for his role in the film.
In a chat with Sushant Sinha, Jimmy said that he didn’t want to go back home after his studies so he decided to stay in Bombay. He heard about ‘Maachis’ from some mutual contacts and met Gulzar to request him to keep him as an AD. But Gulzar asked Jimmy why he, if good at acting, would want to do direction? Jimmy replied that hard people never get a break until after six years and he doesn't want to go home.
Anyway, Gulzar wanted Jimmy to read the script, and after finishing reading, he asked him which role he would like to play. He picked Jimmy’s character because his pet name is Jimmy, and he met Gulzar as Jasjit Shergill. He further added that he had to listen to a lot of taunts. A lot of people said that this is a mad choice to play such a small role. They all asked him to wait for his time. Jimmy was paid around Rs 20,000 for the role. He considers himself lucky that his family was supporting him. After ‘Mohabbatein’, he slowly stopped taking money from home.
