Kajol broke down in tears after hearing the story of THIS Karan Johar–Shah Rukh Khan classic film
Long before Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham became the ultimate comfort watch for a generation — the film we turn to for its drama, emotions, and that iconic line, “It’s all about loving your parents” — it had already touched Kajol deeply. When Karan Johar first narrated the story to her, she was moved to tears. The film’s emotional depth, its portrayal of family ties, and its heartwarming spirit struck a chord with her instantly. With a star-studded cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor, K3G became more than just a film — it became a sentiment.
Produced by Dharma Productions, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was made on a grand scale with a budget of ₹35 crore. But its success far exceeded expectations, raking in around ₹135 crore worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year. Remarkably, it even surpassed the box office collection of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, another blockbuster starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel.
What makes this blockbuster even more memorable is the story behind its casting. Karan Johar had always envisioned Kajol in the lead role but felt apprehensive about approaching her. At the time, she had just gotten married, and he worried she might turn down such a big project. To his surprise, her reaction was nothing like he feared. As soon as Karan finished narrating the story, Kajol grew emotional and began to cry.
In an old interview with Hindustan Times, Karan recalled, “After hearing the story, Kajol started crying and told me, ‘I will do this film.’” That moment sealed her return to one of the most iconic characters of her career.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham will complete 24 years towards the end of 2025, and nearly two and a half decades later, it still holds an irreplaceable place in audiences’ hearts. During an Instagram Live session in April, Karan finally addressed a question that fans have been asking for years: will there ever be a sequel to K3G? While promoting Kesari Chapter 2, he took a moment to respond candidly. “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 is not happening,” he said. “We should leave it alone now.”
