David Dhawan starred in a special fireside chat organised by PVR as part of the ongoing David Dhawan Film Festival. The fun conversation featured David talking about his life and films with his son
Varun Dhawan, who is also joining him for their upcoming comedy ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, hitting cinemas on June 5. David was his usual entertaining self, keeping the crowd laughing with funny stories and memories.
David Dhawan on 'Kalank's failure
Varun spoke about the impact of his first big setback, saying, "When I had my first flop, which happened after a couple of hits, it shook me very badly. I wondered, yeh kaise ho gaya, kyun ho gaya? This is because I had a row of hits. My father always told me that it is the law of averages." David then stepped in with a confession of his own, admitting, "There's one film of his that didn't work and it depressed me. It was a very big film.
Karan Johar must have sold his last shirt to make that movie! That film was Kalank (2019)." The veteran director then had the room in stitches as he revealed, "I asked Sanjay Dutt, 'Tu kyun kiya yeh picture? Madhuri Dixit thi isliye?'. Sanju was very upset during that film." Varun rounded off the moment with a heartfelt reflection, adding, "A lot of hard work was put into that film. It was the hardest we have worked on a film. Hence, we wondered why it didn't work."
David Dhawan recalls Amitabh Bachchan calling Varun Dhawan 'lambi race ka ghoda'
David also stated, “I went to see Varun’s first film (Student Of The Year; 2012). I remember he was feeling a bit nervous. But when I saw the climax of the film, I told him, ‘You’ve done very well’. Then, at night, I got a message about him. It said, ‘Lambi race ka ghoda’. Do you know who sent it? It was Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan)!”.
'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai' release shifted to June 12
On the work front, Varun Dhawan is gearing up for his upcoming release ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, though fans will now have to wait a little longer than expected. The film, which was originally slated to open in cinemas on June 5, has been pushed to June 12, with the makers issuing an official statement to address the change. The statement read, “We would like to clarify that our film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was originally scheduled for release on June 5, a date we had announced several months ago. However, after recent developments and considering the prevailing situation, we felt it would be more appropriate to shift our release.”
