Kalki Koechlin reveals most stars who travel in luxury cars live in 1BHKs: 'some people have bodyguards and PR'

Actress Kalki Koechlin is known for her unique choice of roles in films, and she recently shed light on some of Bollywood’s lesser-known realities, beyond just talent.

Kalki shared that the industry often demands more than mere talent, and image-building has become an unofficial requirement to remain in the limelight. In an interview with Aleena Dissects on YouTube, Kalki recounted her personal resistance to such expectations and highlighted how some of her peers go to great lengths— even making lifestyle sacrifices —to maintain an illusion of glamour.

She recalled attending award events in her Swift, saying her outfits used to be bigger than the car. “They wouldn’t let my car enter the venue; they would stop it, and then I would have to show my invite and tell them, ‘It’s me,’” she said, describing how she was repeatedly held up at events for not arriving in a luxury vehicle.



She considers this a reflection of her freedom and a way of showcasing her true self. “I don’t want that because I want to be spontaneous with my life and just do things on my own,” she explained. She added that not having an entourage does reduce public visibility—but it also allows her to live a simpler, more grounded life. However, she mentioned airports as the one place where fame becomes overwhelming: “I have dedicated that 1.5 hours at the airport to my fans because it is back-to-back selfies.”

Kalki about her way of living

When asked about the role of public relations and image in sustaining an acting career, Kalki acknowledged the practical side of things. She said that it is important to a certain extent. “If you are a big actor, safety is a big issue—there are some crazy people out there, especially after big stars—so I understand the need for some people to have bodyguards and PR.”

“I know people who live in a tiny 1BHK, but they have an Audi. They’ll come to meetings in an Audi with a driver, but they live in a tiny hole,” she revealed.

Kalki emphasised that she prefers to spend on personal freedom and comfort. For her, spending money means enjoying beautiful stays in Goa and travelling to Mumbai. She said she spent most of her savings on these two things, rather than maintaining a luxurious public image.
