Karisma Kapoor's lawyer calls Sunjay Kapur's Rs 30,000 cr estate a 'media creation': 'Why is Priya Kapur not disclosing a will'
The fight over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s reported Rs 30,000 crore estate is getting more intense. His children with ex-wife Karisma Kapoor, along with his mother Rani Kapur, have taken legal action against his widow, Priya Sachdeva Kapur, claiming she forged his will. The contested document names Priya as the sole heir to Sunjay’s fortune. Now, adding more weight to their side, Sunjay’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith has also stepped in to support Karisma and her kids.
Speaking to Republic World, Mandhira questioned the validity of the will. She said it was hard to believe her brother, who was deeply attached to his children Samaira and Kiaan, would leave everything to just one person and not include them. Calling it out of character, she added that the family plans to challenge the will since Sunjay was a father of three. Mandhira also revealed that they don’t even know what’s in the will yet and feel completely in the dark about the whole matter.
Mandhira also raised concerns about accessing the will. She revealed that her mother had reached out to the company for details, including the will and the autopsy report, but received no response, with claims that her emails were compromised. Finding out about the will came as a complete shock to the family, as they had no idea it even existed.
Karisma's lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, clarified that the legal battle isn’t about Karisma getting anything for herself. He said the fight is focused on securing her children’s share, as her late ex-husband intended. The case revolves around the assets mentioned in a will—covering his overseas holdings—which has never been disclosed, registered, or probated. The dispute does not concern the assets already covered under a trust in India.
Jethmalani also addressed the widely reported Rs 30,000 crore figure, calling it 'a media creation.' He explained that the exact value of Sunjay's personal assets can’t be determined yet, as the details in the will haven’t been disclosed. The lawyer said they don’t know what assets are included or their true valuation, and that the reported number likely combines both his Indian and overseas holdings. Without complete information from the will or other beneficiaries, he added, it’s impossible to make an accurate assessment at this stage.
He also questioned Priya's claim of giving Rs 1,900 crore to Karisma and Sunjay’s children. He pointed out that if the estate really is Rs 30,000 crore and there are only five class-one heirs—Sunjay’s mother, his three children, and Priya—there’s no reason for the will to remain undisclosed. He stressed that the children’s share isn’t a favor from Priya, but their rightful inheritance, and criticised the claim that the remaining Rs 28,000 crore would automatically go to her. The focus, he said, is on securing what legally belongs to Sunjay’s children.
When asked about the March 21 will that reportedly left Sunjay’s entire estate to Priya, Jethmalani said they haven’t seen it yet and can’t comment. He added that the court has now ordered its disclosure, so the family will soon know the details of the will.
According to Bar and Bench, Priya's lawyer responded to Samaira and Kiaan’s claims, saying the children have already received assets worth Rs 1,900 crore and haven’t been left on the streets. However, sources say that control of Sunjay Kapur’s assets still lies with Priya under the RK family trust, and the children currently have no access to their Rs 1,900 crore inheritance.
Meanwhile, Rani Kapur’s lawyer, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, said the real fight is between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev. He added that while Rani Kapur is affected by the dispute, she will file her response soon, making her position clear.
