Kiran Rao: As a filmmaker, I feel that everybody ought to be conscious of what they put in their films
Kiran Rao discusses the impact of films and said,'As a filmmaker, I feel that everybody ought to be conscious of what they put in their films' Talking about the responsibility of a director and whether films influence society, Kiran said that one of the interesting things about Sapiens is how Yuval Noah Harari talks about storytelling and collaboration as the two key factors that have brought humans to where we are. She said,"I think that's the best way to explain how we've arrived here from wandering in the savanna in small packs. Storytelling has an incredible influence on us. When you set out to make a film, what you say even subconsciously has meaning. Whether it's literally juxtaposing two images or creating a narrative, it conveys a message, whether you intend it or not. We can't just say, 'Oh, it's all just for dramatic effect or fun. I didn't think of that. I didn't intend that.' You have to really consider what you're conveying when you tell any story, no matter how innocuous, nonpolitical, or emotional it may seem."
She said,"I believe all filmmakers should keep these ideas in the back of their minds because their images do convey messages, whether they like it or not. When people say that I'm interested in the messages that my films convey, I feel, shouldn't everyone? Because anything you create - whether you write, take photographs, or make films - your medium is your message. Every decision you make has very wide and long-term ramifications. As a filmmaker, I feel that everybody ought to be conscious of what they put in their films. Of course, that doesn’t mean we should take the fun out of filmmaking, but as members of society, we must be aware of what our images could even inadvertently convey."Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
