Ambassador for Gender Equality Kriti Sanon on feeling empowered as a woman in the industry
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) India announced the appointment of actor, producer and entrepreneur Kriti Sanon as its Honorary Ambassador for Gender Equality, a role in which she will work with partners to champion solutions that help women and girls learn, lead and thrive, furthering the UNFPA’s mission to promote equality across communities.
Speaking to Mirror, Kriti expressed, “Gender equality begins at home. Children should be raised equally. We keep hearing stories about people not having enough money to educate both, their son and daughter. So, they prefer educating the son. Education shapes your life and career choices, so it is important to give both your son and daughter the freedom to follow their dreams.”
Kriti reflected on her upbringing and credited her parents for raising her sister Nupur and her without limitations. “From childhood, I felt that men and women are equal, thanks to the way I was brought up. We were two sisters, and while growing up, I was never told l can’t do something because I’m a girl. My parents were always supportive whenever it came to my dreams. Many people including my relatives said, ‘Oh, she wants to become an actor, she won’t get married. People don’t marry such girls.’ My parents never really paid any heed to that. When you see both your mother and father work and manage the house together, you grow up realising that there are no gender roles.”
