Madhuri Dixit gets nostalgic about 90s cinema, recalls watching ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ with 32 family members: ' It was a different era, and now it’s different'
As she gears up for her upcoming project Mrs. Deshpande, Madhuri Dixit-Nene opens up about the long-running debate of cinema vs OTT. During a recent media interaction, the actor fondly looked back at the magic of 90s cinema and shared how films like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ brought families together in a way today’s content rarely does.
Madhuri is set to appear in Mrs. Deshpande, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. The psychological thriller also stars Siddharth Chandekar and Priyanshu Chatterjee. The series is the Indian adaptation of the French miniseries ‘La Mante’ (‘The Mantis’) and will stream on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
Madhuri Dixit opens up about 90s cinema
As stated by OTT Play, when asked about the power and influence of actresses from the 80s and 90s, Madhuri described that period as truly unforgettable. She said that films were the primary source of entertainment, with audiences relating deeply to characters, music, and dance. “People still remember most of the songs and dance to them even decades later. Even the current generation grooves to those tracks. It’s a golden era and it continues, only in a different form,” she explained, referring to today’s mix of OTT, cinema halls, YouTube, and Instagram.Family outings and theatre culture
Agreeing that distractions were fewer when she began her career, Madhuri emphasized that cinema was once a complete family outing. She recalled, “During ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, 32 of my family members went together to watch the film. It was a different era, and now it’s different.”Films lost in transition, but not forgotten
Madhuri also pointed out how classic films like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ and ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ feel somewhat “lost in transition” today due to the evolving content landscape. She noted, “Now, you know the target audience. You make a film knowing who will watch it. They calculate everything. I think films like those will be made again, and one doesn’t take away from the other.”Cinema vs OTT: Coexistence, not competition
Addressing the ongoing cinema vs OTT debate, Madhuri insisted that both can thrive without overshadowing each other. “Cinema will always be an experience where people want to go together and enjoy. OTT is more in-home something you watch after wrapping up work. One won’t take away from the other,” she said. She added that the COVID-19 lockdown forced audiences indoors, but now with theatres open, people simply have more choices.Madhuri’s next release: ‘Mrs. Deshpande’
