Maharaj to Annapoorani: Films that courted controversy for hurting religious sentiments

In the world of cinema, filmmakers often push boundaries and explore sensitive topics. However, sometimes these narratives stir controversy and provoke strong reactions from various communities. The upcoming film 'Maharaj' is currently in the centre of a storm, with certain groups calling for the film to be banned, a day ahead of its release. From 'Maharaj' to 'Annapoorani' and 'Pathaan', here are some recent films that have faced backlash for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Maharaj

A day before its premiere, the period drama 'Maharaj', featuring the debut of Bollywood star Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan, sparked calls for a ban from a the VHP. Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, 'Maharaj' is set in pre-independent India and revolves around the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, ignited by allegations of misconduct by a prominent figure. The controversy peaked when VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi tweeted, "Won't tolerate the disrespect of Sanatan Dharma (Sanatan Dharma ka apmaan sehen nahin karenge). Ban Maharaj Film. #BoycottNetflix."
According to the streaming giant, 'Maharaj' follows Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer, who advocated for women's rights and social reform in India.

Annapoorani

Nayanthara's film 'Annapoorani' stirred up controversy following its OTT release, leading to its removal from the streaming platform in India. Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, the film depicts a young woman aspiring to be the country's best chef, requiring her to cook non-vegetarian food. This seemingly offended some Hindu groups who filed FIRs against the team and called for the film's immediate ban.

The backlash prompted Nayanthara to issue an apology, in a statement that read, "It aimed to mirror life's journey, where we learn that obstacles can be overcome with sheer willpower... In our sincere attempt to share a positive message, we may have inadvertently caused hurt."

Adipurush

Om Raut’s 'Adipurush', starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, has been embroiled in controversy since its theatrical release on June 16. The film, a retelling of the Hindu epic Ramayana, faced criticism for its character design, storyline, and dialogues. Numerous complaints and court cases were filed against the producer-director across the country for allegedly hurting Hindu religious sentiments. In response, writer Manoj Muntashir issued a formal apology: "I accept people's emotions have been hurt. With folded hands, I extend my unconditional apologies."

5/6

Antony

Joshiy's 'Antony', starring Joju George and Kalyani Priyadarshan, hit theatres on December 1 and received a positive audience response. However, a particular scene depicting a gun hidden inside a Bible sparked controversy, with allegations of offending sentiments of the Christian community. The producers later released a statement clarifying that it was never their intention to offend anyone and aimed to resolve the controversy.

6/6

Pathaan

Shah Rukh Khan's 'Pathaan' faced controversy over its song "Besharam Rang," which featured Deepika Padukone in an orange bikini. The song prompted some groups to allege that it was "hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus", arguing that it was not only objectionable but also promoted vulgarity. Despite the backlash, the makers stuck to their guns and refused to change the colour of the actress' clothing in the song. The film went on to cross the Rs 1000 crore mark at the box office.
