Mahima Chaudhry on women's remarriage in India: ‘Second marriage acceptable, but divorce...’
‘Durlabh Prasad Ki Dusri Shaadi’ seems like a fun family film, yet the filmmakers highlight its focus on women's remarriage and the attached stigma. Recently, Mahima Chaudhry, Shrikant Verma, and Vyom Yadav talked about changing mindsets, society pressure, and "log kya kahenge."
Mahima Chaudhry, who plays Babita, discussed how marriage holds deep cultural value in India, especially for women. In her Bollywood Bubbles interview, she said, “Marriage is a very important thing in our culture… In India, it’s such a big part. We’ve seen so many grand weddings this year alone, and in everyone’s life, especially in our culture, marriage is a huge deal.” She highlighted the changing attitudes toward remarriage, pointing out its growing acceptability for women in modern times. “Aaj kal, especially women ke liye toh acceptable ho gaya hai. Pehle aadmi toh do-do shadiyan kar lete the. You know unki karwa dete the kisi bhi age me,” she noted.
The actress referenced historical cases to highlight how men remarried without facing any opposition. “For example, if they became widowers, like Shrikant Verma ji's grandfather had four marriages arranged because whenever his grandmother passed away, he'd remarry right away,” she shared, while stressing that women deserve the same acceptance today.
‘Durlabh Prasad Ki Dusri Shaadi’ is a simple family film from 2025 set in Varanasi. It mixes fun and feelings to talk about second marriages, especially for widows and how society judges women for it. The son Murli (Vyom Yadav) tries to get his dad Durlabh (Sanjay Mishra) remarried to Babita (Mahima Chaudhry) to please his girlfriend's rich family.
