Real name and early career

Ritu Chaudhry, who later became known as Mahima, attained her stage name when she joined Bollywood in accordance with Subhash Ghai's request. Ghai has a practice of launching every new leading lady with a name that begins with the letter "M," and he advised Mahima to fit in that tradition, which stuck in Mahima's film career. Before becoming a film actress, Mahima was a well-known model who appeared in commercials and entered a few beauty pageants; the Miss India competition was the most notable one. Mahima became famous in India when she appeared in a Pepsi commercial with Aamir Khan and Aishwarya Rai, who were also two moving figures in commercials.

Bollywood debut and stardom

Mahima had the dream debut film, 'Pardes' (1997), opposite Shah Rukh Khan. As Ganga - a simple and regal character, Mahima impressed both audiences and critics alike. It was a massive hit! Mahima became an overnight star and won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, establishing her as one of the hottest new stars in Bollywood.

3/5

Regional cinema and versatility

Mahima moved beyond Bollywood and into regional cinema, where she took on Bengali, Punjabi and many other films. She demonstrated her versatility and range through the many roles she took on while appealing to the varied audiences across the industries. Her venture into new work demonstrated her commitment to acting and exhibiting growth as an actress.

Personal struggles and resilience

In 1999, while filming 'Dil Kya Kare', Mahima met with a devastating car accident and sustained multiple injuries, along with facial scars. This was a major trauma for Mahima and she would have to endure a lengthy, painful recovery. Regardless of this, Mahima remained strong, working through tremendous personal turmoil and taking breaks from acting. Yet she persevered through these struggles to return to acting.

5/5

Comeback and inspirational journey

After personally navigating some challenges and some time off, Mahima found her way back to the public in a positive light. She opened up about living with real breast cancer, her diagnosis, treatment and recovery in 2022. Her honesty and sharing of courage, strength and resiliency inspired her fans. In her own right, Mahima became a figure of resiliency and perseverance. Returning from her memorable introduction to her past in real life, her journey was impressive and she also made an impression through her bravery and determination as she battled these challenges: her growing up years in general, risking her life for her career path and battling breast cancer.
