Mallika Sherawat: This is not the best time to reach out to Hollywood studios for content collaboration
Mallika Sherawat has been stationed in the US since March this year. The actress used her time to promote her recent film, RK/RKAY, directed by Rajat Kapoor. The film had a theatrical release in the US and Canada. Mallika, who has also made her foray into the digital space as an artiste, will soon be seen in not one but two web-shows, back to back. However, three years ago, Mallika had decided to adapt The Good Wife for the Indian audience for digital consumption. Given that she’s been in America for a prolonged period, has she opened conversations with studios there for adapting other shows? “The Good Wife had Ronnie Screwvala and Sooni Taraporevala attached to it but the studio honcho was embroiled in a #metoo controversy and the project fell apart. Right now, my plate is brimming with indian content that I am working on. I have two shows and some fantastic movie offers. Also, while I am here in the US, I can see that things have not entirely opened up here. It’s not the best time to reach out to Hollywood studios for content collaboration. Maybe, when things are better towards the end of the year...it might help meeting a writer and figuring things out.”Mallika, who had co-produced Hisss, was expected to make a splash as a producer with the Indian adaptation of The Good Wife. When asked if she plans to produce some of her forthcoming films and shows, which can give her better control over the content, Mallika says, “If the makers of the film or the show want me to lend my name as a producer, I will do it. It gives one some more control but I believe that filmmaking is a team-based process. I don’t believe in the idea of taking over a project by becoming a producer. My intention is to give the project what’s best for it. Say, for example, RK/RKAY was partly crowd-funded. I’ve also donated for it. That’s another way of contributing a film that you feel deserves to be made. You can cut down a filmmaker’s struggle.”
