‘Masaan’

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and written by Varun Grover, ‘Masaan’ offers a lyrical and honest look at life and loss in Varanasi. The film intertwines four lives, including a young woman burdened by public humiliation and a father navigating corruption while trying to stay dignified. It also follows a lower-caste boy experiencing love across rigid societal lines and the ancient city that watches it all. The emotional sincerity and quiet strength of the performances make ‘Masaan’ deeply immersive and incredibly moving.

2/5

‘Ugly’

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Ugly’ is a dark psychological drama that examines the unsettling corners of human nature. The plot begins with a little girl’s disappearance but quickly shifts into a tense maze of greed, insecurity and hidden agendas. The film stands out for its stark realism and its refusal to simplify trauma or offer comforting answers. It compels viewers to confront unsettling truths about desperation, selfishness and the fragility of morality.

3/5

‘Kahaani’

Set in Kolkata during the vibrant festival of Durga Puja, ‘Kahaani’ follows Vidya Bagchi, a pregnant woman searching for her missing husband. What begins as a simple investigation transforms into an absorbing thriller filled with unexpected twists and emotional layers. Vidya Balan delivers a masterful performance that anchors the entire film with strength and nuance. The sharp writing and atmospheric visuals make ‘Kahaani’ both gripping and unforgettable.

4/5

‘Aligarh’

Inspired by real events, ‘Aligarh’ tells the poignant story of Professor Siras, a respected scholar who faces discrimination after his personal life is exposed. Directed by Hansal Mehta, the film stars Manoj Bajpayee in a powerful and deeply empathetic role, supported by Rajkummar Rao as the journalist chronicling his struggle. The narrative highlights themes of identity, privacy and societal prejudice with grace and sensitivity. ‘Aligarh’ stands as a meaningful reflection on the fight for dignity and acceptance.

5/5

‘Ankhon Dekhi’

Rajat Kapoor’s ‘Ankhon Dekhi’ presents a thoughtful and philosophical narrative set against the backdrop of middle-class Delhi. The story revolves around Bauji, an ordinary man who suddenly decides he will only believe what he personally witnesses. This decision, though unusual, leads him on an eye-opening path of introspection and discovery. With Sanjay Mishra delivering a memorable performance, the film invites viewers to rethink their own beliefs and perceptions.
