Which is the richest family in Indian film industry?

Bollywood is full of stars who earn big money. From hit films to brand deals and side businesses, many actors, directors and singers have made huge fortunes. But it’s not just about single stars. Bollywood also has some very wealthy families who have been part of the industry for years. While most people think of the Khans, Kapoors or Chopras as the richest, there is one family that stands above them all, with a massive wealth of Rs 10,000 crore.

2/6

Meet the Kumar family

According to the Hurun Rich List, the richest family in Bollywood is Bhushan Kumar’s family. They run T-Series, the biggest name in the Indian music and film business. In fact, they are not only the wealthiest in Bollywood but also the richest family in all of Indian cinema. This is quite surprising because, unlike other top filmy families, they don’t have any superstar actors leading them. Yet, their money power beats everyone else's by a large gap.

Humble start with cassettes

The Kumar family’s amazing story began with Bhushan Kumar’s father, Gulshan Kumar. As per Mint, he once sold fruit juice in Delhi. Things changed when he and his father bought a small shop that sold music cassettes. Gulshan worked hard and soon became India’s ‘Cassette King’. He then started his own company called Super Cassettes, which we now know as T-Series. Sadly, after Gulshan was murdered, Bhushan stepped in and grew the company even more.

4/6

Rise of T-Series

So how did the Kumars get so rich? Most of their huge wealth comes from T-Series. Bhushan Kumar runs the company along with his uncle, Kishan Kumar, who is also an actor turned producer and co-chairman. Other family members are also part of the industry. Bhushan’s wife, Divya Khossla, is an actor and director. His sister Khushali Kumar acts, while his younger sister Tulsi Kumar is a singer. This shows the whole family is active in showbiz, helping the empire grow.

T-Series is not just a music label anymore. It has become one of India’s top film production companies. They have given us some of the biggest hits like ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’, ‘Dangal’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Aashiqui 2’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, and more.

5/6

Other rich film families in Bollywood

Coming behind the Kumars is the Chopra family, who own Yash Raj Films and BR Films, with a net worth of over Rs 8,000 crore. Next is Shah Rukh Khan’s family. SRK is already the richest actor in India with a personal net worth of Rs 7,800 crore, according to Forbes. The Kapoors, who were once the richest family in Indian cinema, now have a combined net worth of just over Rs 2,000 crore.

6/6

South cinema’s rich families

If we look in the South, some of the richest film families are from the Telugu industry. The Konidela-Allu family includes Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, Ram Charan and Allu Arjun. As reported by Mint, together they have an estimated wealth of Rs 4,000 crore. Then there’s the Akkineni-Daggubati family with stars like Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya, Venkatesh and Rana Daggubati, whose combined net worth is over Rs 5,000 crore. Still, none of them come close to the Rs 10,000 crore empire of Bhushan Kumar’s family.
