Mumtaz gets teary-eyed as she remembers Shammi Kapoor before his demise: 'He said he wouldn’t live for long...'
Bollywood actress Mumtaz had a breakthrough in her career with the 1967 film 'Ram Aur Shyam', where she starred opposite Dilip Kumar. After rising to fame, many of her contemporaries expressed a desire to share screen space with her, even though they had reportedly rejected her in the past. She also made headlines for her rumoured relationship with actor Shammi Kapoor, and the actress recently revealed that the actor had once proposed to her. Mumtaz was seen getting emotional during a recent interview when she remembered Shammi’s final days.
Mumtaz about her rumoured relationships
In a conversation with Radio Nasha, Mumtaz reflected on her journey through the highs and lows of showbiz, addressing whispers about her relationships and offering insights into her connections with fellow stars. In a promo released ahead of the full interview, the actress shared personal anecdotes involving Dev Anand, Jeetendra, and Shammi Kapoor.
Recalling the early days, she said, “Jeetu, I’m sorry, but this is what you said — ‘Jeetu said, aap Mumtaz ko kyun le rahe ho?’ Nobody wanted to work with me.”
Mumtaz reminisced about her 'Tere Mere Sapne' (1971) co-star, Dev Anand. She admitted that all her heroes used to love her, which sparked several link-up rumours in the industry, and Dev affectionately used to call her 'Mumzi'.
Mumtaz about Shammi
Mumtaz further stated, “Shammi Kapoor was so good-looking that no girl could resist crushing on him. Wasn’t he the most good-looking man?” She revealed that he had proposed to her in the past.
The 'Prem Kahani' actress recalled her final meeting with Shammi. With tears in her eyes, she described seeing him unwell but still holding on to his habits. “When I saw him sitting on a chair, and he was still drinking… from far away, I asked him, ‘Why are you drinking when you are not well?’ That was the moment I came to know that he said he wouldn’t live for long.” She told him, “Please take care of yourself.”
Visibly moved, she recited a shayari that echoed her enduring emotions: “Hum bhi toh dekhe zamane ki yaari,
Bichhde sabhi baari baari…”
Shammi and Mumtaz were seen together in 'Brahmachari'.
