Mumbai: Director Muzaffar Ali's creative partnership with Khayyam gave rise to magical compositions in four films, 'Umrao Jaan', 'Anjuman', 'Zooni' and 'Daaman'. Ali expressed the hope that the unreleased film 'Anjuman' as well as the recorded songs of 'Zooni' and 'Daaman' will be released soon.

"Khayyam has been a substantial part of my cinematic journey. I had worked with Jaidev in my first film 'Gaman' and approached him for 'Umrao Jaan'. But I began to feel that his compositions did not have the "oomph factor"! So I went to Naushad Sahab as well but found him rigid. Khayyam was my third choice, and in him, I found an apt composer for not just 'Umrao Jaan' but all my future films as well."

The 'Umrao Jaan' team including lyricist Shahryar and Asha Bhosle went on to create film music history. Ali said, "During Anjuman, I heard Shabana Azmi humming one of the song, and she was tuneful, so I thought why not get her to sing! Luckily, Khayyam approved -- and she did. But do notice the last song, Kab haath mein tera haath nahin. That is sung by Khayyam and

Jagjit Kaur

. It is perhaps the only time they sang together. It was even replicated by singer

Tina Sani

in Pakistan who gave credit to us all."
