Nana Patekar recalls how Sutapa Sikdar pushed Irrfan Khan's name for roles during Khamoshi: 'I assured her, ‘He is such a big actor that one day he will recommend our names''
Veteran actor Nana Patekar recently opened up about his heartfelt memories of the late Irrfan Khan, a luminary of Indian cinema celebrated for his unmatched talent and grace. In a candid conversation with Vishal Bhardwaj, Nana shared anecdotes that highlighted Irrfan’s remarkable personality and enduring legacy.
Recalling an early conversation with Sutapa Sikdar, Irrfan’s wife and a screenwriter, Nana revealed how her confidence in Irrfan’s potential left a lasting impression. “Sutapa had worked on the script for Khamoshi and was instrumental in pushing Irrfan’s name for roles. I assured her, ‘He is such a big actor that one day he will recommend our names,’” Nana said, underscoring his unwavering faith in Irrfan’s future stardom.
Nana also reflected on his visit to Irrfan’s home in Madhya Pradesh, recounting the late actor’s affinity for simplicity and nature. He shared a poignant memory of Irrfan expressing his love for night-blooming jasmine plants during their conversation. “He had asked me to plant one for him, and it’s a request that has stayed with me ever since,” Nana said, revealing his deep sense of connection to Irrfan’s wishes even after his passing.
Irrfan Khan’s untimely demise in April 2020, at the age of 53, after a valiant battle with a rare neuroendocrine tumor, left a void in Indian and global cinema. Known for his extraordinary performances in films like The Lunchbox, Piku, Maqbool, and Life of Pi, Irrfan’s work transcended borders and genres, earning him accolades worldwide. Despite his immense success, Irrfan remained humble and deeply rooted in his values, a trait that Nana Patekar fondly remembered during his tribute.
Nana’s reflections not only celebrate Irrfan’s cinematic achievements but also shed light on the profound relationships he nurtured, both personally and professionally. As Nana concluded, “Irrfan was not just a great actor but an extraordinary human being. His memory will forever bloom, just like the night-blooming jasmine he loved so much.”
