Neena Gupta opens up about her FIRST husband; says she NEVER experienced the love shown in movies or books: 'Mere peeche koi paagal nahi hua'
Neena Gupta, who is known for being frank about her personal life, recently took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, sharing sweet and bittersweet stories of her early romances. She recently opened up about her first love.
Neena’s first marriage was to Amlan Kusum Ghose, but it was short-lived. The two parted ways amicably within a year. Later, she made headlines for her relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, with whom she has a daughter, Masaba Gupta. Years later, she found lasting companionship in Vivek Mehra, a New Delhi-based chartered accountant, whom she married privately in 2008.
‘My first love was with an IIT guy’
But long before all this, Neena had her heart set on her ‘first love’, a young man studying at the Indian Institute of Technology. Sharing details of this youthful romance, she told News18 Showsha, “My first love was with an IIT guy, who I went on to marry eventually. My college fellows used to be very jealous of me at that time. Their parents wouldn’t allow them to wear spaghetti straps and I was a modern woman, according to them. Woh salwar kameez-chunni waale the aur woh mujhse jalte the."
When a date didn’t go as plannedNeena didn’t just reminisce about her friends’ reactions to her first love—she also shared an amusingly awkward incident from that time, highlighting how young romance often brings its fair share of challenges.
“This one time, my then-boyfriend and I decided to go watch a film. I revealed my plans to one of those girls by mistake and then they went and told my mother that main ek ladke ke saath picture dekhne jaa rahi hoon. My parents didn’t let me go. Back then, we didn’t have phones and so, I couldn’t inform him. He kept waiting for me," she shared.
Has Neena ever truly been in love?Though she spoke warmly of her first love, Neena also offered a surprising reflection on whether she’s ever experienced the kind of love that novels and films talk about. “I’ve never been in love. The love that I see in movies and read in books, I’ve never experienced that in real life. Nobody has loved me like that. Toh main bhi kaise kar loon? Karna bhi toh padhega na kisi ko. Mere peeche koi paagal nahi hua (laughs). But I had madly fallen in love with someone. It didn’t translate into a relationship because it wasn’t possible," she said.
Neena Gupta continues to inspire many with her honesty and fearless spirit, both in her personal life and professional choices. Her candid stories remind us how life is truly a mix of sweet, awkward and sometimes unfulfilled moments. On the work front, Neena still wins over audiences with the roles she picks and her bold choice to try new things. Recently, she was seen in the web series ‘Panchayat’ and film ‘Metro In Dino’.
‘Metro In Dino’ is directed by Anurag Basu and features an ensemble cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The movie explores urban life and relationships, showcasing strong performances and a contemporary narrative style.
