The making of 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' holds a significant place in cinematic history. Released in 2001, this family saga, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor, was one of the most lavish productions of its time in the Indian film industry. Nikkhil Advani, an assistant director during its production, fondly recalls the behind-the-scenes stories and acknowledges the unwavering support of producer Yash Johar.
'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' marked Karan Johar's second directorial venture after his blockbuster debut with 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. This family drama, featuring a stellar cast, had a larger scale and budget compared to his previous work. Nikkhil Advani, in an interview with Film Companion, remembered an incident where Yash Johar calmly approved the proposed budget, which was a substantial amount for its time, without any hesitation.
The filming commenced with the shooting of the song "Bole Chudiyan," involving a large ensemble of dancers and artists. The production rented out the entire Filmistan studio, converting it into Dharma Studios temporarily. Various enhancements were made to the studio facilities, including makeup room renovations and the addition of amenities like refrigerators and TVs. Notably, each makeup room had a personalized touch, including a letter pad labeled "from the desk of Jaya Bachchan."
During the filming, Karan Johar fainted, highlighting the intense work environment. Yash Johar later reminded Nikkhil Advani of the initial budget estimation, expressing concern over the escalating art budget. Despite the discrepancies, Yash Johar instructed to proceed with the production.
The challenges didn't end with production; negotiations with a major studio for distribution fell through, forcing Yash Johar to self-distribute the film. Despite the hurdles, 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' became one of the pillars of Dharma Productions, alongside 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho.'
