Nitin Baid criticizes pay disparity: Celebrity drivers are paid more than assistant editors

Film editor Nitin Baid recently discussed the challenges faced by young editors in the industry. He is known for his work with acclaimed directors like Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Zoya Akhtar, and Neeraj Ghaywan. He emphasised the exploitation of newcomers, noting that they often find themselves working beyond the specified end dates in their contracts, prolonging their involvement in projects beyond their initial scope.

During his appearance on The Streaming Show with fellow editor Antara Lahiri, Nitin Baid drew attention to a notable imbalance in compensation within the film industry. He pointed out that drivers for major stars often earn more than editors, despite the editors' critical role in shaping the final product. He said, “For the newer entrants, if they’re working beyond a certain period of time, I wish they’re given the confidence… It’s not like they’re going to ask for a lot. You’re going to pay the driver of the star much more than what the assistant will get paid. I’ve had arguments where I’ve tried to explain, ‘My assistant is doing something very creative. He’s putting together a first line-up, this is the story you’re going to see (on screen). Why are you afraid of investing in that person, because it’s helping your film become better.”

Nitin Baid worked as an assistant editor on 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. He later transitioned to lead editing positions for notable films like 'Masaan' and 'Bhavesh Joshi Superhero'. His portfolio includes editing acclaimed movies such as 'Raazi', 'Gully Boy', and 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani', as well as contributing to streaming series like 'Dahaad' and 'Made in Heaven'. Recently, he has edited projects like 'Kho Gaye Hum Kahan', 'Mr & Mrs Mahi', 'The Archies' and 'Chandu Champion'.
