'PK', 'Munna Bhai' to 'Jagga Jasoos': Bollywood sequels that were promised but never made till date

Ranbir Kapoor and Anurag Basu also teased a sequel to 'Jagga Jasoos'. The movie was an awesome idea in that it made a good deal of mesh between mystery and music creatively and through the visual medium, and the audience seemed to enjoy it. Unfortunately, the box office did not reflect likability. Understandably, for Ranbir and Anurag it must have made them reconsider and confirm if they were working on something of significance, but because of that original artistic quality of 'Jagga Jasoos', the financial implications of such a production were nowhere to be found. Ultimately 'Jagga Jasoos 2' was never greenlit.

After 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' achieved success, Rajkumar Hirani also announced 'Munna Bhai Chale America'. There was even a teaser that had everyone buzzing about Munna and Circuit's next adventures. Unfortunately, the film was struggling in various ways. The production was facing challenges, the script didn't feel like it was coming together, and there were issues with Sanjay Dutt, because he had ongoing legal problems. Ultimately, Hirani started doing other projects altogether and that directed sequel faded into a huge 'what if' moment in Bollywood history.

People enjoyed Karan Johar’s film ‘Dostana’ from 2008 because it presented a story in a fresh way and took bold approaches; therefore, there was anticipation for sequels. Then there was some announcements for the follow up film that included new, younger stars as Aaryan with audiences looking forward to seeing them in another movie. But it was met with another disagreement on the making of the film contributed to a delay, and some other drama behind the scenes took it off the table. With audience demand shifted another sequel did not seem viable.

Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Ra.One’ was intended to lift Indian superhero movies into a new realm of cool tech and visual effects. While it was built up a lot of hype before release, it was ultimately not received that well in theaters. Khan mentioned that he had considered a sequel to ‘Ra.One,’ which would expand on the visuals and the universe of the film even further, but this never came to be—in part, because it simply cost a lot to make the first, and it was concluded after its theatrical run that there was insufficient audience demand to return to the character again. While we never got the chance to see another entry in what was Bollywood's biggest superhero movie experiment, it was refreshing to see a big corporate machine like the film industry try something new.

In 2014, following the major success of ‘PK,’ director Rajkumar Hirani spoke of the possibility of ‘PK 2’ with actor Ranbir Kapoor, and since there appeared to be so much interest in the character's reappearance and for the chance to delve deeper into the ideas of the film, this potentially seemed close to happening. But things got messy with Hirani's schedule. Not able to find a working script, and eventually the buzz died down, and ‘PK 2’ simply became another potential sequel that never happened.

The creators of India’s first zombie comedy, ‘Go Goa Gone 2,’ hinted at a potential sequel. Fans waited for the return of Saif Ali Khan’s quirky Boris; the sequel was delayed and never realized. The movie was in a state of development and discussions but the sequel never came to fruition, leaving viewers to wonder whether the zany zombie film would ever go back into production.
