Anupama Prakash, known for
Risknamaa,
Prabha Ki Diary and
Inside Stories: Handcuffed, believes actors today must take initiative and actively seek opportunities rather than wait to be discovered. Speaking about the stigma around asking for work, she said, “I think ego definitely holds a lot of people back. Somewhere people feel that asking for work may make them look desperate, but honestly, there’s nothing wrong in approaching people professionally. Every industry works on communication and networking, so acting is no different.”
According to Anupama, staying visible has become essential in a highly competitive industry. “Actors need to actively reach out now. Earlier maybe things worked differently, but today there’s so much competition that if you don’t remind people about your work and your presence, they may simply forget. It’s important to stay visible.”
While talent remains crucial, she feels it is no longer enough on its own. “Talent is extremely important, but talent alone is not enough today. Networking also matters because this industry runs on relationships, meetings, and interactions. People need to know you beyond your work as well.” She also pointed out that fear of judgment often prevents actors from seeking opportunities. “Sometimes people fear being judged or rejected, especially newcomers. There’s still this mindset that if you ask for work openly, people may think you are struggling. But I feel that thinking needs to change.”
Encouraging actors to be confident, Anupama added, “I would just say don’t feel embarrassed about asking for work. If you truly believe in your talent, there’s nothing wrong in introducing yourself, meeting people, or reminding them that you are available for good projects. Putting yourself out there is not desperation, it’s part of the job.”
