Rahul Bose has been often been dubbed by critics and audience alike as an intellectual actor. So it always comes as a surprise for them when he chooses to star along with glamorous actresses as opposed to his intellectual image.
Ive never thought that way, says Rahul, I think people should be cast according to the role. I think
Mallika Sherawat was rightly cast as the aggressive Delhi girl in Pyar Ke Side Effects and shes right for the part of a theatre actress Shabnam in our forthcoming film Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Aazam, he says.
But what about his casting? I think people cast me for two reasons. Sometimes I get cast for who I am and sometimes directors cast me for what they think I can pull off, he replies.
The talented actor who will soon be seen in Maan... is quite excited about his role. I play a RAW agent Arjun Rastogi who is sent to a small coastal town in Maharashtra where RDX is going to be shipped. While staying there, I start going to watch plays and fall in love with the girl who plays the part of Anarkali played by Mallika.
Arjun realises that this is the worst bunch of losers but he cant help chasing Mallika whos married to Paresh Rawal. So one part of my role is about a RAW agent while the other is head over heels in love with Mallika. Getting these two halves together was the difficult part as there has to be some element of belief involved in it, he explains. Apart from this film, Rahuls looking forward to Tahaan where he plays the village idiot while in Dil Kabbadi, hes opposite Konkona Sensharma. Before The Rains, Aparna Sens The Japanese Wife and The Whisperers are some of his other films that are scheduled for release.
Rahul admits hes got a number of arthouse films. In fact, one publication had even called him the biggest superstar of arthouse cinema. How does he look at these titles? You cant take these compliments seriously, he says, If you do that, youll end up becoming a schizophrenic.
The actor has so far managed to maintain the right balance between serious cinema and commercial films and for those who believe that he could not break the commercial barrier, Rahul just has one thing to say, I believe actions speak louder than words. Time will tell, he signs off.
