'Ranbir Kapoor looks good as Lord Ram,' says Arun Govil about 'Ramayana', dismisses Prabhas' Adipurush'
Veteran actor Arun Govil who is still loved and remembered for playing Lord Ram in BR Sagar's 'Ramayan' will be seen as King Dashrath in Nitesh Tiwari's adaptation of 'Ramayan'. This film sees Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita. Meanwhile, 'KGF' actor Yash will be seen as Ravana. This film is one of the most anticipated movies and while fans are waiting with baited breath, some have also expressed doubts about Ranbir being able to do justice to the role of Lord Ram.
Govil who personified Lord Ram in the iconic TV show, has now opened up on Ranbir playing the role. He said in an interview with PTI, "The Ramayana by Nitesh Tiwari looks very good. It has been made with a lot of hard work by Nitesh Tiwari, the actors and the entire team. The main actor Ranbir Kapoor is looking very good as Lord Ram. He is a good actor and good human being.”
He further elaborated on what it takes to convincingly portray a deity, adding, “To play a God, you’ve to have a good, pure soul, and you have to be a good human being also."
Reflecting on the legacy of the 1987 television classic, Govil acknowledged that any new version of the epic would naturally invite comparisons. He said that Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan continues to leave a deep cultural imprint, making such parallels unavoidable.
The original series featured Deepika Chikhalia as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Laxman and Dara Singh as Hanuman, and remains a benchmark for audiences even decades later.
Addressing the issue of comparisons, Govil remarked, “Comparisons are always made when a standard is set and no one should feel bad that I’m being compared. I believe that in order to play the role of God, you should look like that. The look is very important. When people see you, they should see God in you, and think, ‘God can be like that’,” he added.
He also dismissed comparisons between 'Ramayana' and 'Prabhas starrer Adipurush'. "There is a lot of difference between Ramayana and Adipurush,” he added.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
