Richa Chadha recently voiced her concerns about the stereotypical portrayal of 'progressive' women in Bollywood films during an interview. She criticized how these characters are often depicted as smoking, drinking, and partying in nightclubs, calling them "badly written." Richa questioned filmmakers if they truly know women like these, emphasizing the need for more authentic representations of women in cinema.
In a conversation with Faye D’Souza, Richa voiced her frustration over the shallow representation of women in films. She remarked, “They want to show you as a progressive woman—at least in the 2010s to 2012—by having you smoke and go to nightclubs. Matlab, cigarette jala liya, nightclub mein chale gaye hain." The actress pointed out that these characters often have an existential crisis while looking glamorous on the dance floor, adding, “The song is, of course, a chartbuster. I just find these characters so badly written. I want to ask those filmmakers,Do you know women like these? And how do you still know them when you’re fifty, and this is an early-twenties phenomenon at best? Then everyone gets their sh*t together."
In a recent interview, actress Ratna Pathak Shah expressed her concerns about the portrayal of modern women in films. She criticized the stereotype that defines modernity through smoking and drinking, stating, "The number of scripts I have to turn down... modern auntie kya hoti hai, modern mummy kya hoti hai, modern grandmother kya hoti hai—jo baithe ke sutta marti hai." Ratna emphasized that true modernity lies in how one treats others, rather than superficial behaviors.
