He showed the slick trailer of the film along with Vijay's Kuruvi which he was distributing. Kuruvi is the first big Tamil summer release in the US, so it makes sense for Dasavatharam to piggy ride on it.
This trend of a summer biggie trailer being shown with another equally big summer release was started by Hollywood studios.

Yash Raj the King of Bollywood, started this marketing trend in India. Last summer Rajinikanth's Sivaji, produced by AVM, had a sneak trailer of his daughter Soundarya's animated film Sultan- The Warrior.
But in Tamil Nadu, the trend was given up as producers found that most of the other heroes had "king size egos" and refused to show other heroes��� trailers with their films! Meanwhile, Oscar Ravichandran, the marketing wizard, is planning to have a "first look" trailer of his Gautham Menon directed Surya action adventure Vaaranam Aayiram with his other biggie Dasavatharam.
