Saira Banu once revealed Raj Kapoor arrived on his knees for her and Dilip Kumar’s wedding, just to keep a playful promise: ‘I am doing it for you…’

Last year in December Saira Banu shared memories of their sibling-like friendship on Raj Kapoor’s 99th birth anniversary, including the unforgettable moment when Raj came to Saira and Dilip’s wedding on bended knees!

Throwback wedding photos show close friendship

Saira’s Instagram post also included several photographs of the iconic duo. One image showed Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor posing together in white outfits on a street, their camaraderie evident even in a still photo. Other images captured them laughing and interacting, revealing a friendship that was both heartfelt and enduring. These pictures, combined with the video, offer a rare glimpse into Bollywood history and the personal connection between two of its most celebrated stars.

Saira Banu recalled the bond between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor

Taking to the caption, the ‘Junglee’ actress wrote, “Describing the bond between Dilip Sahib and Raj Ji as mere friendship would be an understatement; they shared a love akin to that of siblings. They sought solace in each other’s company, exchanging secrets that remained unknown even to their own family members. Raj Ji and Sahib were there for each other until the very end.”

Raj Kapoor fulfilled playful wedding day promise

Among the anecdotes shared, one stood out for its humour and warmth. Saira recalled how Raj Kapoor used to nudge Dilip Kumar to get married.
She explained, “Not many people know this but back in the day when Dilip Sahib was still a bachelor Raj Ji would often edge him on to get married, he would say ‘Shaadi Kyun Nahin Karta’ and later on laughingly add, ‘Jis Din Tu Shaadi Karega, Ghutne Ke Bal Chal Ke Aaunga Tere Paas’, and goodness like a great friend he stood up to his words the day Dilip Sahib and I got married. I still remember how he reminded Sahib of this incident saying ‘Didn’t I tell you that I would kneel down the very day you get married I am doing it for you, Thank You For Getting Married.’”

Friendship endured during serious health crisis

The friendship between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor was not just about laughter and fun. It was also about being there for each other during life’s toughest moments. Saira Banu shared a deeply moving story that reflected this unwavering support.
She further wrote, “When Raj Ji had a cardiac arrest, Sahib had flown abroad for a felicitation, he immediately flew back to Delhi and rushed to Apollo Hospital to see Raj Ji, he went near him and said, ‘Raj, wake up! I brought the ‘Khushboo’ of Chapli Kebabs. Let’s stroll through the bazaar as we used to, relishing Kebabs and Rotis. Stop acting; take me to the courtyard in Peshawar.’ Choking with emotion, tears streamed as he spoke to his unconscious friend. They were indeed the best of friends until the very end.
