Fifty five years ago, on October 4, 1964, writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar first came to Mumbai, then Bombay. All of 19, the young man was keen on making it big in the city that never sleeps. With just Rs 27 in his pocket, Akhtar was determined to face the hardships that came his way and overcome adversities no matter what. In a recent post, his better half — veteran actress Shabana Azmi — paid a touching tribute to the celebrated lyricist and writer.
She wrote, ‘On this date 55 years ago a 19 year old boy got down at Bombay Central Station with 27 rupees in his pocket and dreams in his eyes@javedakhtarjadu slept on pavements went without food 4 days but belief in himself. A story of not giving up to adversity and dignity. I salute him.’

She said that despite all the adversities he faced — including sleeping on the pavement and going hungry for several days — Akhtar’s perseverance eventually paid off. The couple, one of Bollywood’s most respected, have huge bodies of work. On the work front, Azmi will be seen next in ‘

Sheer Khurma

’, which is said to be a same-sex love story starring Swara Bhasker and Divya Dutt.
