Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol's 'Gerua' song was made on a budget of Rs 7 crore, reveals Farah Khan: 'Only Bollywood song ever shot in...'
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol remain one of Bollywood’s most beloved on-screen pairs, with classics like ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’. After working together in ‘My Name Is Khan’ (2010), the duo reunited for Rohit Shetty’s 2015 film ‘Dilwale’. Mounted on a budget of ₹165 crore, the film also starred Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon. But SRK-Kajol fans were happy as they got to see their favourite romantic onscreen pair in a song like 'Gerua'. But did you know the song was made in a budget of Rs 7 crore?
Choreographer Farah Khan, who directed the song’s sequences, recently recalled its making during a visit to the home of Shark Tank India’s Ashneer Grover. Noticing the couple’s love for travel, she remarked, “You guys have travelled so much!” To this, Ashneer’s wife Madhuri shared, “We recently visited Iceland, where you shot Gerua.” Farah instantly lit up and asked, “Did you two recreate the iconic Shah Rukh-Kajol scene?” Ashneer laughed it off saying, “No, we didn’t have a chiffon saree for that,” while Madhuri added, “We just played the song in the background.”
Madhuri further revealed, “When we Googled ‘Which Bollywood films have been shot there?’ only your song came up.” Farah explained, “That’s because Gerua is the only Bollywood song ever shot in Iceland. The location is incredibly expensive.” She added, “We shot that song with just two people, and yet the budget was Rs 7 crore.”
The song was filmed across Iceland’s southern coast, covering Reynisfjara Beach, Solheimasandur, the Vestrahorn mountains and its dramatic volcanic terrain. While the visuals were breathtaking, the shoot itself was far from easy due to the biting cold.
In an earlier video for Red Chillies Entertainment, Kajol recalled, “It was so much cold. We couldn’t stand over there. I had three jackets and hoodies on me.” SRK shared his own experience: “That iceberg and we had to be tied to avoid it from slipping away.” Kajol added: “It was getting difficult for us to rehearse there. Our lips turned blue. We couldn’t open them to lip sync.”
Farah too expressed regret about choosing Iceland, admitting, “Who told you there was summer in Iceland?” Director Rohit Shetty chimed in, saying: “This is unbearable.”
