Shah Rukh Khan said he'd be in jail if he did 'Darr' today', Yash Chopra compared his dedication to Amitabh Bachchan

Shah Rukh Khan took a risk early in his career by playing negative roles in films like 'Baazigar' and 'Darr', with 'Darr' marking his first collaboration with Yash Chopra. Despite initial assumptions about Chopra, Khan embraced the 'bad guy' role, leading to critical acclaim and a fallout with Sunny Deol. Chopra praised Khan's dedication, comparing it to Amitabh Bachchan's.

Shah Rukh Khan did negative roles like 'Baazigar' and 'Darr' early on in his career when no actor was willing to take the risk. In 'Darr', he played an obsessive lover who also stalked Kiran, played by Juhi Chawla who was in love with Sunny Deol. This film was also Yash Chopra's first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan. Chopra also directed Khan in 'Dil To Pagal Hai' and 'Veer Zaara' later. Infact, Shah Rukh was a part of Chopra's last film, 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. The actor had spoken about his impression of Chopra and the experience of working on 'Darr' in the documentary 'The Romantics'. SRK revealed, "I had assumed that Yash Chopra would be this tall guy with long hair and semi-hippie kind of a look, very cool and new. So, I was taken aback because this was just a simple man, so straightforward, and so unlike what I had imagined.”

Talking about being offered, 'Darr', Khan said, “He told me, ‘I think you are a great actor. This is a bad guy role. He was very honest. I wanted someone else, but they are not willing to do it. I really think this is a damn good role and you should do it.’”Shah Rukh took up the role because he was just getting good boy roles that time. "I agreed to do the role because everybody was offering me good guy roles, I didn’t want to do good guy roles.
I wanted to be a bad guy. And it was an aggressive film. All the romance was there, but it was a very mean film. In today’s time and age, I think I would be put behind bars if I did a role like that," he said. Meanwhile, Yash Chopra had also praised him and compared his dedication to Amitabh Bachchan. He said, "Shah Rukh will let you do hundred rehearsals. And different type of performances, different types of scenes he would do. Unless he is satisfied or the director is satisfied, he doesn’t give up. Amitabh Bachchan has the same dedication." After 'Darr', there was a fallout between SRK and Sunny Deol and they did not speak to each other for years.
