Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Josh’ film director Mansoor Khan praises actor’s talent: ‘I would cast him again’
Celebrating his 60th year, Shah Rukh Khan stands as a legend who transformed desire into a philosophy and made fame deeply personal. Over the years, he has created countless unforgettable moments both on screen and in real life. On this milestone, those who have closely witnessed his journey reflect on the era he has shaped so distinctively. Recently, Mansoor Khan, the director behind SRK’s film ‘Josh,’ spoke about what makes Khan’s acting talent and shared memorable moments from the set.
Talking to Hollywood Reporters, Mansoor mentioned that there are many iconic Shah Rukh moments in ‘Josh’, but his favourite is a quieter scene where Max confronts his sister, Shirley (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). It is a delicate moment where Max has to convey his suspicion that Shirley is dating a boy (Chandrachur Singh) from the rival gang and that he might know more than he is letting on. Khan’s expressions and body language in that scene are powerfully subtle, creating a tension between the siblings that hadn’t existed in the film until that moment.
The director further said, “Shah Rukh was my first and only choice for Max. I’d had him in mind since the days of my previous film, Akele Hum Akele Tum. I was convinced that no one else could play this part — and I still feel that way. If I were to make Josh today, I would cast him again. It may not be his most successful film, but performance wise, it’s one of his most defining roles.”
‘Josh’ is set in Vasco, Goa, where two rival gangs, the Hindu immigrant Bichhoos led by Prakash and the Christian Eagles led by Max Dias (Shah Rukh Khan), fight for control. Max and his twin sister Shirley (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) are orphans and members of the Eagles. Prakash’s brother Rahul falls in love with Shirley and opens a bakery, unaware of the gang rivalry. The plot unravels with revelations about Max and Shirley being heirs to valuable land, leading to violent confrontations. Max accidentally kills Prakash in self-defense and is later acquitted, uniting the gangs. The film blends action, romance, and drama set in 1980s Goa.
