Shahid Kapoor faces backlash over 'Jab We Met' divorce remark: Fans say he’s “more Kabir Singh than Aditya”

Shahid Kapoor has sparked a heated debate online with his recent comments about the fate of his and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s iconic characters, Aditya and Geet, from the 2007 romantic comedy 'Jab We Met.'

In an interview with The Indian Express, Shahid supported director Imtiaz Ali's earlier claim that Aditya and Geet would likely be heading for a divorce today. Shahid explained his stance, humorously stating that Geet, being “her own favourite,” would be difficult for anyone to tolerate for too long.


The internet, however, is not amused. Fans of the beloved film have taken to social media to express their disappointment and disbelief. Many felt Shahid’s remark was unnecessary and dampened the nostalgia surrounding the beloved characters. One Instagram user wrote, “Please don’t kill the last delusion that keeps us alive! This shouldn’t be coming from Aditya…it breaks [heart emoji].”

Another user drew a sharp contrast between Shahid’s character in 'Jab We Met' and his portrayal in 'Kabir Singh,' saying, “He’s more Kabir Singh than Aditya IRL.” Some fans even used the opportunity to revisit Shahid and Kareena’s real-life breakup during the film’s release, with one comment reading, “Kareena dodged a bullet and got her nawab. Jokes on Shahid.”

The debate intensified when one user pointed out Geet’s arc in the film, writing, “She loved Anshuman more than herself, btw,” referring to Geet’s obsession with marrying her boyfriend, Anshuman, who initially rejects her but later seeks her back after Aditya intervenes. Fans accused Shahid of dismissing the depth of Geet’s character and reducing her to a stereotype.

While Shahid maintained that his perspective aligned with the director’s vision and not his own judgment, the remark has left fans conflicted. For many, 'Jab We Met' remains a cherished cinematic memory, and this new interpretation of the characters’ future feels like an unwelcome rewrite of a story they hold dear.
