Shashank Khaitan reveals his thoughts on Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s chemistry in 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania'

Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan have always been celebrated for their exceptional on-screen chemistry in the Dulhania franchise, earning them a spot as one of the most beloved on-screen pairs. Even Shashank Khaitan, who directed both Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, was impressed by the way they complemented each other on screen. Reflecting on their dynamic, Khaitan recently shared an incident that made him appreciate their compatibility as actors.


During a conversation with Mashable India, Khaitan recalled a particular moment while shooting Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. He mentioned that it was a simple, light-hearted scene where Dhawan’s character, Humpty, attempts to kiss Bhatt’s Kavya, only to receive a slap in return. The playful yet impactful sequence stood out for Khaitan, making him realize the strength of their chemistry. He explained that while such scenes might seem light and humorous during filming, their emotional depth becomes apparent later. It was at that moment he understood just how well the two actors worked together.

Khaitan further elaborated on his off-screen rapport with the actors, emphasizing that their camaraderie translated naturally into their performances. Sharing an anecdote, he revealed how Varun Dhawan, fresh off working on Main Tera Hero with his father, David Dhawan, often questioned whether he needed to add more flair to his performance. Accustomed to a louder style of acting, Varun sometimes felt the film’s tone was too subdued. However, Khaitan assured him that the restrained approach was necessary for the role.

The director also reflected on the significance of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania in his career, as it marked his debut project with Dharma Productions. He noted that all three of them—Varun, Alia, and himself—were at relatively early stages of their professional journeys, making the experience even more special. Currently, Khaitan is directing Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, featuring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor.
