Sunjay Kapur’s Net Worth: Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband ranked among the world’s richest with a Rs 10,300 crore fortune

As per Forbes, Sunjay Kapur’s net worth at the time of his death was a whopping $1.2 billion (Rs 10,300 crore). His highest wealth had touched $1.6 billion (Rs 13,000 crore) in 2022 and 2024. That made him wealthier than Shah Rukh Khan, who is India’s richest actor with a net worth of around $880 million (Rs 7,700 crore).

Sunjay’s fortune was also far greater than the entire Kapoor family put together. His former in-laws—the extended Kapoor family—have a total net worth of about Rs 2,000 crore, which is just one-fifth of what Sunjay had. Meanwhile, Karisma Kapoor’s net worth is said to be around Rs 120 crore, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Sunjay Kapur was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a major name in the auto parts industry. The company was started in 1997 by his late father Surinder Kapur, who was well-known in the Indian auto world. The name 'Sona' came from his grandfather’s jewellery business.

After his father passed away in 2015, Sunjay took over and expanded the business to China, Mexico, Serbia and the US. According to Bloomberg, Sona Comstar has a current market value of Rs 31,000 crore (nearly $4 billion). The company makes parts for seven out of the top ten car brands in the world and played a big role in the electric vehicle industry.

As per Forbes, Sunjay was listed as the 2703rd richest person in the world when he passed away. Just a few months ago, his public company was valued at Rs 40,000 crore, showing just how strong and valuable his business had become. Even though he mostly stayed away from the limelight, Sunjay made powerful moves in the business world. His plans helped his company stay future-ready, especially in the fast-growing electric car sector.

Sunjay and Karisma Kapoor got married in 2003 and were divorced in 2016 after a lot of legal drama. In the end, the couple chose to settle things peacefully. As per a past ANI post on X (earlier known as Twitter), Sunjay bought bonds worth Rs 14 crore for their two children. These bonds came with an interest payment of Rs 10 lakh per month. He also gave Karisma a Mumbai house that was owned by his father.
