Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore inheritance row: Priya Kapur seeks confidentiality in asset disclosure, Delhi HC flags concerns

Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, are fighting a legal battle against Priya Kapur over their father, late Sunjay Kapur’s estate. The family dispute over the massive estate reportedly worth around Rs 30,000 crore has taken a new turn in the Delhi High Court.

The court has raised doubts over widow Priya Sachdev Kapur’s request to keep details of his personal assets and liabilities in a sealed cover.

Court raises concern over sealed cover request

As reported by PTI, Justice Jyoti Singh, who is hearing the matter, said allowing Priya’s request could create difficulties for the children in defending their claim. Priya’s application asked for the list to be filed in a sealed cover or, as an alternative, to set up a “Confidentiality Club” where access would be limited.

The judge, however, pointed out the potential problems with such secrecy. “Allowing the application may be problematic for the simple reason that as the alleged beneficiary of the estate, they (Karisma's children Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur) have a right to question the assets disclosed. So, tomorrow if they have to verify and go about asking what has happened, if they are bound by this confidentiality club, how will they ever defend their case?” Justice Singh asked.

Priya Kapur highlights need for confidentiality

Kapur's lawyer argued that confidentiality was necessary because of the sensitive nature of the information. “There are bank details, other financial details. Why should the public have someone's bank account number?” the counsel asked. The lawyer further said that after previous hearings, “press conferences” were being held, and the matter was drawing too much attention.

Children challenge late father’s will

The case began when Samaira and Kiaan questioned the will of their father. They claim that, as his children, they are entitled to a share of his vast estate, reportedly valued at Rs 30,000 crore.

Earlier this month, on September 10, the Delhi High Court directed Priya to provide a complete list of Sanjay Kapur’s assets. Thursday’s hearing was focused on how exactly those details should be presented, openly, under seal, or with restrictions.

Hearing set to continue on next date

The Delhi High Court did not deliver a final decision on Thursday. The matter will be heard again on Friday.
