Teachers' Day Special: Sushmita Sen on 'Main Hoon Na' – ‘The role was small, but the impact aas huge’

Sushmita Sen, who played a teacher in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Main Hoon Na,' recently revisited the magic behind her iconic role as Miss Chandni in the 2004 blockbuster.

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, the actress shared her experience of portraying the glamorous chemistry teacher, a character that has since become a symbol of grace and charm in Indian cinema.

Sushmita Sen fondly recalled how director Farah Khan beautifully captured India's unspoken admiration for teachers, offering audiences a character that resonated on a deeper level. "India looks at teachers like that, but it has never been expressed in a film. I think Farah did a great job of that," she said.

She also shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes moments, including how her now-iconic introduction scene with Shah Rukh Khan came about spontaneously. "Shah Rukh actually did that during the shot and was like, 'Dude, what are you looking like?' Farah just said, 'Perfect, cut!' The pallu flying over his face wasn’t planned; it was one of those things that just happened in the moment," Sen recounted with a smile.


Despite having a relatively small role, Sushmita Sen’s portrayal made a lasting impression. She humorously recalled how Farah Khan apologized for the limited screen time, only for Sen to receive an outpouring of praise from industry veterans after the film’s release. "The role hadn’t changed, but the impact had," Sushmita Sen reflected, highlighting how her character’s elegance resonated with audiences.
