Director Karan Boolani, who is gearing up for the release of 'Thank You For Coming' starring Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila and Shibani Bedi, finds the tag of ‘chick flick’ “derogatory”.

In an interview with Indian Express, filmmaker Karan Boolani shared that a film led by female actors comes under more scrutiny than a project headlined by a male character.

Elaborating further, Karan added that his mother doesn’t like action films, she can’t see blood and gore. According to him, as an audience everyone enjoys having a laugh, feeling good about themselves, and falling in love? These are what ‘chick flicks’ promise.

The filmmaker added that the tag of ‘chick flick' he finds as a derogatory term. Referring to a girl as a ‘chick’ to begin with and then it rhymes with ‘flick’.

According to him, we rarely say ‘bro-movie’. Hangover is a film that girls and boys enjoyed equally. ‘Chick flicks’ become a space for girls to watch and enjoy, like what happened with Veere Di Wedding. It is just a tag. He added that one can call it anything, even a friendship film.

Meanwhile, 'Thank You For Coming' recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it opened to good reviews. While the film awaits its India release, urban ‘chick flicks’ have often been criticised for showing women obsessed with only sex, fashion and men.
