'The Bluff': Priyanka Chopra Jonas reveals that motherhood helped her understand the pirate character
Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas is set to appear in the upcoming action thriller 'The Bluff', where she plays a fierce pirate fighting to protect her family. The film presents a dramatic story centred on a former pirate who has chosen to leave her dangerous past behind. She settles into a peaceful island life with her family. However, her quiet life does not last long. When threats from her past begin to resurface, she is forced to confront old enemies.
In a recent conversation with The New Indian Express, Priyanka Chopra Jonas spoke about the preparation that went into her role. The actor revealed that she initially had little knowledge about female pirates. While preparing for the role, she began researching historical stories of women who lived as pirates.
She explained that this research opened up a fascinating world of history, "When the script first came to me, I didn’t actually know there were female pirates. So I did a lot of research and was fascinated by an Irish female called Grace O’Malley. She was known as the Pirate Queen back in the 1500s. There are tales of female pirates who fought battles while they were pregnant. I really went down a rabbit hole and discovered so many incredible stories about these brave women."
Priyanka also spoke about how her personal life helped her emotionally connect with the role. In the film, her character is a mother who must go to extreme lengths to protect her child from danger. The actor explained that she had recently become a mother when she first read the script. This personal experience made the story resonate strongly with her. She said, " I think it’s something that will resonate with all parents. It’s certainly the reason I responded so strongly to the script when I first read it. That was two years ago so I was a new mum, with all the emotions that come with that. I kind of understood Ercell as a character and the extremes someone like her will go to in order to protect her child."
'The Bluff' features several action sequences that required Priyanka Chopra Jonas to perform physically demanding scenes. When asked whether she suffered any injuries while filming, the actor admitted that there were a few minor mishaps during production. However, she explained that such incidents are common while working on action-heavy projects. Priyanka said, "Just a few cuts and bruises, which you have to expect with something like this. I have been lucky enough to work in this genre a few times and so I trust my body and the people around me to meet the challenge. The stunt team really supported me and pushed me to do as much as I possibly could. It’s not every day you get to be a pirate." She also credited the stunt team for supporting her during the physically intense scenes.
'The Bluff' is directed by Frank E. Flowers and written by Flowers along with Joe Ballarini. The film also features actors Karl Urban, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Safia Oakley-Green, and Temuera Morrison in key roles.
