A Unique Birthday Bond with History

Rohini Hattangadi shares her birthday—April 11—with Kasturba Gandhi, the wife of Mahatma Gandhi. Decades later, she earned global acclaim for portraying Kasturba in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi (1982), a coincidence she has described as deeply personal and almost fateful.

2/5

Breaking Barriers in Traditional Theatre

She made history as the first woman to perform in the Kannada folk form Yakshagana and became the first female in all of Asia to take the stage in a traditional Japanese Kabuki play (Ibaragi). These achievements marked her as a pioneer who expanded the boundaries of Indian theatre.

3/5

An All-Round Star at NSD

During her time at the National School of Drama, she stood out by winning both the Best Actress and Best All-Round Student awards. In the same graduating class, her husband, Jayadev Hattangadi, won the Best Director award, making them one of NSD’s most celebrated alumni couples.

4/5

Typecast as a Mother at 27

Her realistic, aged portrayal of Kasturba Gandhi at just 27 impressed audiences worldwide but also led to early typecasting. She was repeatedly offered motherly roles to much older actors, famously playing Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in Agneepath despite being younger than him in real life.

5/5

Athletic, Resourceful, and Resilient

As a student, she excelled in sports like volleyball and basketball and was an NCC cadet, while also training in classical dance. Her adaptability shone during a stage performance while five months pregnant—when a too-tight costume forced her to quickly fasten her trousers with safety pins and cover it up mid-show without breaking character.
