When the showman found love not in his wife but heroine

This story is about one of the most renowned names of Bollywood who gave cinema a new meaning with his acting and direction. He was often called the OG Showman of cinema, and his name used to frequently come up with his actresses. Though in one of the documentaries, this actor-filmmaker mentioned that he always drew a line between his professional and personal life, there came a point when his love affairs disrupted his marriage. The matter escalated to the extent that his wife packed her bags, along with their children, and left the house.


The entire incident was mentioned by this actor’s son in his autobiography. “When I was young, my father’s name was in the news for his affairs with many actresses. But the memories of the disputes in the house faded with time,” read an excerpt describing the showman’s affair.

Elaborating further, the autobiography mentioned, “There was a lot of fight between mummy and papa. This time, mother was not ready to step back, and she left the house with me. For some time, we stayed in a hotel, and later we had a flat in Chitrakoot, and then started living there. When Papa realized his mistake, then things got sorted out (sic).”

The legendary actor and filmmaker in this story is none other than Raj Kapoor, whose wife, Krishna Kapoor, once packed her bags and left the home along with their children after knowing about his extramarital affair.

The above account is from Rishi Kapoor’s autobiography ‘Khullam Khulla,’ wherein he even revealed the name of the actress with whom his father was involved. “When my mother came to know about his extramarital affair with Sangam co-star Vyjayanthimala, the matter got worse,” he wrote.

In the same book, he mentioned Raj Kapoor’s affair with Nargis before she got married to Sunil Dutt. “At that time, my father was 28 years old and had just entered films four years earlier. He was in love with someone other than my mother—Nargis, the heroine of his films,” quoted Rishi Kapoor.

Raj Kapoor and Krishna tied the knot in 1946 and had five children: Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, and Rima Kapoor.
