Let’s take a closer look at her journey.
Indrani Mukherjee’s rise in Hindi cinema
Indrani Mukherjee made her debut with Usne Kaha Tha, starring Sunil Dutt and
Nanda in the lead roles. Her first role as a lead actress came in Rajesh Khanna’s debut film, Aakhri Khat, which released in 1966.
Directed by
Chetan Anand, the film was a milestone for both actors. Indrani impressed audiences with her poise and acting skills as the ill-fated village girl, Lajjo. The song Baharon Mera Jeevan Bhi Sawaro became a nationwide sensation, cementing her place as a fresh new face to watch. The film was even selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 40th Academy Awards in 1967, though it did not secure a nomination.
Establishing her place in the industry
Following her initial success, Indrani took on strong and memorable roles. By the 1970s, she had become a steady presence in Hindi cinema, appearing in films like the war drama Haqeeqat and the family entertainer Parvarish, alongside stalwarts such as Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.
The 1980s and beyond
Though she earned critical acclaim for films like Dharam Veer and Mr. Natwarlal, Indrani’s screen presence gradually declined during the 1980s. She chose to prioritise her family and personal life over the limelight.
