The actor who redefined survival in Bollywood

In an industry that frequently has box office numbers to determine an actor's career duration, Mithun Chakraborty is a true survivor. He has maintained his career for what often appears to be back-to-back flops. He holds the record for the most number of non-successful films as a lead actor in Indian cinema. But he has continued to endure and maintain his star power. More than once, he has proven that survival outweighs failure.

A string of consecutive flops

Mithun Chakraborty ’s mid-to-late 1990s were a tough time for him. Between 1993 and 1998, he is reported to have suffered 33 straight flops. For most careers, that would be enough, but Mithun had been through too much to worry about that. Even at his career's lowest point, Mithun had made a number of successful films in Bollywood, like 'Cheetah' in 1994, 'Jallaad' in 1995, and 'Ravan Raaj: A True Story' also in 1995.

Major comebacks

The legendary actor has always been known for his comebacks. Films such as 'Guru', 'OMG: Oh My God!', 'Housefull 2' and 'The Tashkent Files' showed this return to mainstream recognition. His ability to change from lead roles to meaningful supporting roles allowed Mithun to link with generations and last through time.

Mithun Chakraborty's National Award wins

Mithun Chakraborty has faced a number of ups and downs in his career, yet he is a three-time National Award winning actor. He has won Best Actor for 'Mrigayaa', Best Actor for 'Tahader Katha' and the Best Supporting Actor award for 'Vivekananda. And of course, the cult classic Disco Dancer became a massive hit internationally.

Mithun Chakraborty is still going strong

At 75 years old, Mithun Chakraborty shows no signs of slowing down. In 2024, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in recognition of his ongoing sustained longevity in Indian cinema. His last appearance was in Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Bengal Files'.
