Excerpts from a chat:
You have been to Gujarat several times. How has your experience been shooting in Rajkot?
I have come to Gujarat on various occasions, and every visit has been a pleasure. I am in Rajkot now and we shot in the palace just outside the city and it was a beautiful experience. I love the fact that this is such a clean city with a distinct flavor of its own. I absolutely enjoy having Gujarati food, so I have been relishing the food here and simply having a good time.

This is your second Telugu film, so are you consciously looking at regional cinema?
No, I am not. My primary focus is on Bollywood and the reason is simple that is I have been doing Hindi cinema for long and I am really comfortable with the language. My main aim is to do highly content driven films and at the same time I am looking at doing some international television shows as I feel their production value and their standard is at a different level.

With so many Indian actors now going international, has it become easier to get international projects now compared to how it was earlier?
The world has opened up a lot these days and the Indian story has become so big that it is difficult to ignore us now. You cannot have an international story without an Indian character and that has amounted to Indians getting more roles and reach in the international projects.
So is it more revenue driven? Because people say that Indian cinema has grown in such a way that we are now getting international attention?
Not at all. We are still making the same kind of pot boilers. Something like a The Lunchbox is far a wide. The thing is that we as a market are so big and self-sufficient that we don’t need to look at the West for revenue. Our films make such huge amount of money within India that no one really needs to care about the international market. Same goes for international production houses. So many of them are now investing in our films because they know we are a huge market. Revenue is playing a big role in today’s time.
You said you want content driven roles. So what kind of roles do you crave for?
I would really like to do a classic romance because that is something I haven’t done yet. Apart from that, a war thriller which has a lot of intrigue and complexity is something that really excites me.
But do you think our definition of romance is still restricted to that typical college love story? So does it make it more difficult for an actor of a different age group that much more difficult?
I don’t believe in these kind of things. I believe it all depends on how you think. If you think that it can’t happen then it surely won’t. I don’t want to think within the box and would like to believe that everything is possible. And there is scope in Indian cinema where you can break the stereotype and do something different.
