'Told Priyanka Chopra to fix her nose,' reveals 'Andaaz' producer Suneel Darshan as he opens up on the actress' botched nose surgery just at the start of her career
Just after Priyanka Chopra won Miss World, she made her way to the movies. Her first Hindi movie was Anil Sharma's 'Hero: The Love Story Of A Spy'. Priyanka was seen alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the film. At the same time, the actress was cast for 'Andaaz' with Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. However, just at the beginning of her career, Priyanka's nose shape changed due to botched nose surgery which was to remove a nasal polyp. The doctor accidentally shaved the bridge of her nose, altering its appearance.
Now Suneel Darshan who was the producer of 'Andaaz', has said in an interview that he asked her to get a nose job. In a recent chat with Minutes of Masala, Darshan shared that although Priyanka didn’t fit the conventional mould of beauty at the time, she stood out for other reasons. “She wasn’t conventionally good-looking, but she had a powerful presence and an alluring voice,” he said, adding that he always believed in her potential, even when the attention on the set of Andaaz leaned more towards Akshay and Lara.
He also recalled a conversation with Priyanka about her appearance. “Before I did Andaaz, I did tell her that she should do something about the bridge of her nose. She knew that that was due, and her father and her mother were such good doctors. It wasn’t an issue, they got it repaired immediately,” he said. Acknowledging the risks involved in such decisions, Darshan noted, “Cosmetic procedures can be risky and dangerous… Sometimes, there is perfection in imperfection. I don’t normally suggest such things to people.”
Priyanka herself has addressed this chapter in multiple interviews. Speaking to The Howard Stern Show, she candidly recounted how a botched surgery left her struggling emotionally. “The surgeons made mistakes during the procedure. This thing happens, and my face looks completely different, and I went into a deep, deep depression,” she said.
Meanwhile, Sharma who directed Priyanka in her first film also had spoken about it and how upset Priyanka was due to this tragedy just at the start of her career. He said during a chat with Bollywood Thikana, "I’ll tell you what happened. A big tragedy happened with her. She was wonderful, I’d already signed her, my wife herself presented her with a cheque outside a temple. I left for a trip to America and Europe after Gadar released, and I returned after two months and found out that Priyanka had gotten an operation on her nose because she wanted to look like Julia Roberts. This is what I read in the papers, and I wondered why she’d do something like this; she was already good-looking.”
He added, "She had decided to return to Bareilly and return after some months, and was offering her signing amount back to me." However, Sharma recommended a skilled makeup artist to help her regain confidence. Priyanka later acknowledged his support, describing him as “very kind” during her Howard Stern appearance.
