‘Toolsidas Junior’ was awarded the Best Feature Film in Hindi honour at the 68th National Film Awards, which were announced on July 22. This sports drama was helmed by Mridul Toolsidass and marked Rajiv Kapoor’s last onscreen appearance before his demise in 2021.
Dedicating the win to the late actor, Mridul said in a statement, "I cannot imagine a greater tribute to both, my real and reel fathers, as we win this award today. Toolsidas Junior was my passion project to pay an ode to my father, which was played by Rajiv Kapoor on screen. Unfortunately, my father, as well as Rajiv sir, passed away before the release of the film, however, I am sure it was their blessings that have resulted in this victory today.” The film’s lead actor Varun Buddhadev also earned a special mention from the jury for his performance. ‘Toolsidas Junior’ also starred Sanjay Dutt and Dalip Tahil in pivotal roles. This film narrated the story of a son who takes on the tough task of fulfilling his father’s dream of winning an important snooker tournament.
In conversation with ETimes, Sanjay Dutt had shared that he wanted ‘Toolsidas Junior’ to release on the big screen. He had said, “I will never forgive Mr Ashutosh Gowarikar and T-Series for them to release it on OTT, they should have waited and seen it on big screen."
