Tusshar Kapoor may not have made his mark in the way he intended to, but it has not stopped the versatile actor from giving performances that are being critically acclaimed. He entered Bollywood as a romantic hero, but then made audiences burst into laughter with his roles in Kya Kool Hai Hum and Golmaal. And his latest avtaar is that of the terrifying Dilip Buva in Shootout at Lokhandwala.
Meet Tusshar Kapoor, the actor who never fails to surprise viewers with his frequent makeovers. Quiz him about yet another change in image and he's quick to answer, "No it's not like that at all. I am doing what I like to do. It's true that when I entered film industry I had the image of a romantic hero and today I am also experimenting with negative roles, but that's because as an actor I should be versatile to avoid getting stereotyped. Be it romance, comedy or a negative character, I love to play all sorts of roles as an actor." Slow to begin with, Tusshar is finally at a stage he defines as "comfortable". "Despite my launch film Mujhe Kuch Kehnaa Hai doing well at the boxoffice, the failure of other projects adversely affected my growth process. But now I feel happy that my career has started moving in the right direction and with the desired pace. I am currently working on Aggar and Dhol which I believe will definitely entertain audiences," he says. It was Tusshar's hard work that made Dilip Buva's character so realistic in the film. Says the actor who even gave up shaving to get under the skin of the character, "I did a lot of research for the character to make it as close to the real man as possible. I used to rehearse my role on the basis of the information given in Buva's records." With couples, papas and betas all working together to make films a family business, literally, has he contemplated working with daddy dearest and Ekta didi? "No such plans right now," he answers with a laugh but adds, "Dad is quite busy with his business these days. But I would definitely love to work with my family in a project produced and directed by my sister." Talking about his co-stars Tusshar says, "By God's grace I've always shared a good rapport with my co-stars. But my experience with Amitji in Khakhee and Sanjayji and Vivek in Shootout... were memorable ones. I've also really enjoyed working with Kareena, she is a wonderful actor. I'm looking forward to working with her in Goalmaal 2."
But is there any actor with whom Tusshar still wants to work? "I would definitely like to work with Tabu and Kajol. These two actresses are very creative and versatile. If I get a chance to work with them I will definitely grab the opportunity," comes the response.
