She Began Working at Just 9 Years Old to Support Her Family

Before fame found her, Aruna Irani’s life was marked by hardship. Born into a financially struggling Parsi family, she was the eldest of eight siblings. At just 9 years old, she began working in films—not by choice, but out of necessity to support her household. Her debut was a small role in the 1959 film Ganga Jamuna, where she appeared as a child artist. From a young age, she juggled auditions and shooting schedules, sacrificing her education to become the family’s breadwinner.

She Was a Trained Classical Dancer Who Rarely Got to Show It

Aruna Irani trained in Kathak and other Indian classical dance forms, but her potential as a dancer was often overshadowed by the glamorous or vamp roles she was cast in. Despite this, she dazzled audiences with her energy and grace in hit dance numbers like “Chadti Jawani Meri Chaal Mastani” (Caravan, 1971). Had she been given more roles as a classical performer, she might have rivaled even the top dance divas of her era.

She Seamlessly Transitioned to Television at a Time When Few Film Stars Did

Long before OTT platforms blurred the lines between film and television, Aruna Irani made a successful leap into the small screen. In the early 2000s, when many yesteryear stars were struggling to stay relevant, she became a household name again with shows like Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Mehndi Tere Naam Ki, and Vaidehi. Not just an actress, she also turned producer and director for several hit TV shows, proving her sharp understanding of the evolving entertainment landscape.

She Was a Frequent On-Screen Sister to Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra

In a career filled with iconic roles, Aruna Irani often found herself cast as the sister to superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, and Shatrughan Sinha. Despite the repetitive casting, she infused each character with unique emotional depth. Interestingly, while she played the sister in many films, she also played romantic leads opposite the same actors earlier in her career—underscoring both the range of her talent and the peculiar age dynamics of 1970s Bollywood casting.
