UP becomes first state to make 30 films 'tax free' in four years!

Beginning with Gattu in March 2012 till Feb 24 2016, 29 films had been declared 'tax free' by the Akhilesh Yadav's government and 'Neerja' becomes the 30th film to be exempted from entertainment tax.

The Uttar Pradesh government declared 29 films tax free between January 1, 2012, and February 24, 2016, reveals information provided by Arvind Singh, Public Information Officer of Institutional Finance Department, to activist Nutan Thakur under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The films declared tax free are 'Gattu', 'Krishna aur Kans', 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', 'Two Little Indians', 'Dedh Ishqiya', 'Jai Ho', 'Yaa Rab', 'Bhootnath Returns', 'Mardaani', 'Mary Kom', 'Katiyabaz', 'Char Sahabzade', 'PK', 'Tevar', 'Hawaizaada', 'Jai Ho Democracy', 'Hamari Adhuri Kahaani', 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan', 'Miss Tanakpur Hazir Ho', 'Ishq ke Parinde', 'Janisaar', 'Masaan', 'Drishyam', 'Manjhi-The Mountain Man', 'Once Upon a Time in Bihar', 'Chalk N Duster', 'Bajirao Mastani', 'Airlift' and 'Saala Khadoos'. Recently, 'Neerja' has also been declared tax free, which makes it 30.
Nutan has alleged that most of these films have been granted tax free status without any reason and without following the required procedure, leading to loss to the state exchequer.
