Vir Das accuses Prague cafe of racism, owner offers apology
TL;DR
- Comedian Vir Das accused the staff of a Prague cafe of racism by 'refusing' to serve him because of his skin colour
- Later, the owner of the cafe called Das and offered an apology on the behalf of his staff
NEW DELHI: Comedian Vir Das has accused a cafe in Prague of
"Guys, if you're ever in Prague. Heads up Cafe Cafe.... don't really like serving brown people. We sat down and got ignored. Called out six times, ignored us. Was with my parents. We left. Help spread the word so they know we exist and can be treated equally?" he tweeted.
Das further wrote that the cafe staff's racist behaviour was too "blatant".
"I'm gonna add to this and say I realize this is a strong statement. I do. I don't make it lightly. I've seen the subtle behaviour, this couldn't have been more blatant. It was almost funny. I write this because this cafe is owned by someone, who employs people. They should be aware," he added in the same thread.
Shortly after Das's tweet, the comedian tweeted that he got a call from the cafe owner who offered an apology on behalf of his staff for their offensive behaviour.
"UPDATE: The owner of Cafe Cafe called my team. He's going to take it up with his staff and apologized for the behaviour. We thanked him. He seemed like a genuinely good person. Thanks for stepping up social media my parents and I thank you and appreciate the support," he later tweeted.
When asked how he was certain that the cafe's staff was racist, Das said that there were five free waiters and despite repeatedly asking to be served, they chose to ignore him.
"Well. Five free waiters. We made eye contact with them and asked for service. They saw us, ignored us and chatted amongst themselves. Then served all the white people next to us. I've seen a lot of shite in my life, this was a pretty blatant man. Wouldn't write about it otherwise," he said.
Das concluded by saying that other than this place the rest of the people have been "nothing but wonderful".
Das's tweet created quite a furore on social media. So much so that within hours of his tweet there were a couple of more allegations of racism against the same cafe on a travel and restaurant website.
