LUCKNOW: Sufiana singers Pooran ChandWadali and Pyarelal Wadali, popularly known as Wadali Bandhu, are all set tomake their mark on the silver screen.
They are lending their voices to twosongs written by Gulzar, for a Punjabi movie based on the novel, authored by Amrita Pritam.
The duo (who incidentally, have never been to school, but possess a divineunderstanding of classical music and Sufism) while talking to reporters atLucknow University, on Saturday, said that a fusion of Pop with Sufi lyrics, wasspoiling the basic elements of mysticism in the genre.
Born in village GuruKi Wadali, Punjab, the birth place of the sixth Sikh guru Hargobind Saheb, thisis the fifth generation of Wadalis, which is now carrying on the legacy ofSufiana music.
They said that pop singers did not understand the conceptsand base of classical singing, but depended on rhythm and beats to sell theirmusic.
"For them, the spirit and message of the lyrics and that of Sufism,hardly matters," they said. The duo have been honoured with the Sangeet NatakAkademi award for their contribution to music.
